Of all the exam components, the oral is the one students rehearse least. Written practice is easy to do alone; speaking practice needs a conversation partner, and that partner is rarely available on demand. So most students walk into the oral having barely practised the one thing it tests: speaking fluently under pressure. AL1 Tutor's Oral Practice gives them that partner.
What a session looks like
For Stimulus-Based Conversation, the child is shown a visual stimulus — an illustrated everyday scene or situation — and the tutor speaks the prompts aloud via text-to-speech, just as a real examiner would. The child responds, and the conversation continues. It is a rehearsal of the real format, not a worksheet about it.
Structure beats length
The most common oral mistake is rambling — long, unstructured answers that lose the thread. A strong SBC response follows a shape: describe the situation, make a personal connection, then offer a wider reflection. Ninety seconds of structured, fluent speech scores better than three minutes of meandering.
- Practise the three-part shape — situation, personal connection, wider reflection — until it becomes automatic.
- Work across a range of stimulus types: everyday scenes, infographics, and social situations all appear in real papers.
- Focus on fluency and connectives ("because", "however", "on the other hand") rather than cramming vocabulary.
- Repeat the same stimulus a second time after feedback — the improvement between attempts is where the learning happens.
How it helps
For students, the value is sheer repetition without embarrassment: they can fumble, restart, and try again as many times as they like, with no audience. That removes the anxiety that makes the real oral harder. For parents who may not be confident coaching English or Mother Tongue oral themselves, it provides structured practice that does not depend on them.
